Frequently Asked Questions

The College Nine Senate at a weekly meeting

Can we get food funded?

No. Food costs are not funded, full stop. Build your budget around other expenses.

How long until we hear back?

The Senate contacts you within 1–2 days to schedule your presentation, and decisions typically arrive within 2–3 weeks of your submission. You'll get the decision by email.

Can organizations outside College Nine apply?

Yes. Per the Constitution, outside organizations can request up to $200. If you need more, include detailed written justification with your request — without it, the request is returned for revision.

Do we really have to present in person?

Yes. Every request includes a 3–5 minute visual presentation at a weekly Senate meeting — Thursdays, 6:00–7:30pm, in Social Sciences 1, Room 261. It's short, and it's your best chance to make the case for your idea.

What makes a strong presentation?

An itemized budget, a clear picture of who benefits, realistic attendance numbers, and a visible connection to College Nine. Keep slides simple and speak to the "why," not just the "what."

Can we ask for travel funding?

Typically not — travel costs are only considered when at least 25% of attendees are College Nine affiliates.

Are costumes covered?

Typically not. If costumes are central to your event, plan to cover them another way.

Does our event have to involve College Nine students?

Yes. Every funded event must allow at least one College Nine affiliate to participate or be present.

Can we reapply after a denial?

Yes. A denial isn't the end — you can revise and submit a new request. If your request was returned for revision (for example, an over-limit request without written justification), fix the issue and resubmit.

Who do we contact with questions?

Email c9senate@ucsc.edu. We'd rather answer a question before you submit than return a request after.
